Chemical vs. mineral sunscreen: What is the difference?
Summer is just around the corner, the sun is shining from the sky, and we are looking forward to relaxing days at the beach or outdoors. If only there wasn’t the danger of sunburn... That’s why sun protection is a must. As everyone should know by now:
Sun protection is the most important and best anti-aging measure!
But which type of sun protection is the best choice: chemical or mineral? We present our favorites and explain the difference.
By Eva Staudinger
Chemical Sun Protection
Chemical sunscreens contain organic compounds like oxybenzone or avobenzone that absorb UV rays and convert them into heat. This type of sun protection absorbs quickly into the skin and leaves no white film. They offer broad UV protection and are usually water-resistant. Chemical sunscreens are also suitable for daily use and work well under makeup.
Our favorites for chemical sun protection are:
La Roche-Posay Anthelios XL Ultra-Light Fluid: This light sunscreen absorbs quickly, leaves no residue, and offers high protection against UVA and UVB rays. It is especially suitable for sensitive skin.
Beauty of Joseon - Relief Sun – Sunscreen SPF 50+: This sun protection has a light creamy texture that absorbs quickly into the skin without leaving white residues. The chemical sunscreen contains niacinamide to make your skin glow.
Mineral Sun Protection
Physical sunscreens contain mineral ingredients like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide that form a protective layer on the skin and reflect UV rays. This type of sun protection works immediately after application and is especially suitable for sensitive skin types. Mineral sunscreens can leave a white film on the skin but spread well. Those who, like me, suffer from rosacea or sensitive skin may find mineral sun protection better suited for the face.
Our favorites for physical sun protection are:
LePure Zen Solaire organic & physical sun protection balm SPF 20: This sun balm combines organic and physical filters that protect the skin with the highest concentration of light-protective plants and the optimal amount of sun-reflecting minerals. Sweat-resistant and contains only natural ingredients.
Fotoprotector ISDIN Fusion Fluid Mineral Baby Pediatrics SPF 50+: Although developed for babies, it is also especially suitable for sensitive skin – including adults.
When choosing between chemical and physical sun protection, it ultimately depends on your individual needs and skin types. Both variants offer effective protection against UV rays, and it is important to apply sunscreen regularly and generously.
No matter which type of sun protection you choose, remember to protect your skin sufficiently during the summer. Apply sunscreen regularly, wear a hat and sunglasses, and avoid direct sun exposure during the hottest hours of the day. This way, you can fully enjoy the summer without damaging your skin.
