Summer is just around the corner, the sun is shining from the sky and we are looking forward to relaxing days at the beach or outdoors. If only there were not the danger of sunburn... That's why light protection is a must. As everyone should have realised by now:
Sun protection is the most important and best anti-ageing agent!
But which type of sunscreen is the best choice: chemical or mineral? We present our favourites and explain what the difference is.
By Eva Staudinger
Chemical sunscreen
Chemical sunscreens contain organic compounds like oxybenzone or avobenzone that absorb UV rays and convert them into heat. This type of sunscreen absorbs quickly into the skin and does not leave a white film. They offer broad UV protection and are usually waterproof. Chemical sunscreens are also suitable for everyday use and work well under make-up.
Our favourites for chemical sunscreens are:
La Roche-Posay Anthelios XL Ultra-Light Fluid: This lightweight sunscreen absorbs quickly, leaves no residue and offers a high level of protection against UVA and UVB rays. It is particularly suitable for sensitive skin.
Beauty of Joseon - Relief Sun - Sunscreen SPF 50+: This sunscreen has a light creamy texture that absorbs quickly into the skin without leaving a white residue. The chemical sunscreen contains niacinamide to leave your skin glowing.
Mineral sunscreen
Physical sunscreens contain mineral ingredients such as zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, which form a protective layer on the skin and reflect UV rays. This type of sunscreen works immediately after application and is particularly suitable for sensitive skin types. Mineral sunscreens can leave a white film on the skin, but are easy to rub in. Those who suffer from rosacea or sensitive skin, for example, like me, may be better off with mineral sunscreen for the face.
Our favourites for physical sunscreen are:
LePure Zen Solaire Biological & Physical Sunscreen Balm SPF 20: This sunscreen combines biological and physical filters, protecting the skin with the highest concentration of photoprotective botanicals and the optimal amount of sun-reflecting minerals. sweat-resistant and contains only natural ingredients.
Fotoprotector ISDIN Fusion Fluid Mineral Baby Pediatrics SPF 50+: Although developed for babies, it is also particularly suitable for sensitive skin - including that of adults.
The choice between chemical and physical sunscreen ultimately comes down to your individual needs and skin types. Both provide effective protection from UV rays and it is important to apply sunscreen regularly and liberally.
Whichever type of sunscreen you choose, remember to adequately protect your skin during the summer. Apply sunscreen regularly, wear a hat and sunglasses, and avoid direct sunlight during the hottest hours of the day. This way you can enjoy the summer to the fullest without damaging your skin.
